CASA PARTICULAR ULICE y ESPERANZA
« En mars 2008, j'ai passé une merveilleuse semaine à Santo Domingo dans la Sierra Maestra et fait deux promenades guidées (La Comandancia et Pico Turquino) organisées par le Service des parcs — ça se trouve au bout de la route principale à gauche de la barrière.

« Avant et entre les randonnées, j'ai séjourné dans la Casa Esperanza exploitée par un couple extrêmement sympathique et gentil : Ulice et Esperanza. La localisation exacte de la casa peut être obtenue auprès de Villa Santo Domingo. La chambre coûte 20 CUC. C'est une casa particular très propre et très calme de l'autre côté de la rivière dans un jardin merveilleux. Je me suis senti totalement à l'aise.

« Ulice m'a choyé avec des jus fraîchement pressés, des légumes frais et autres délices du jardin de Esperanza. Ulice parle un peu anglais. Les petits déjeuners et les dîners étaient toujours délicieux et copieux. Le couple vit comme sur une fereme avec cochons, poulets, chats et un chien. Directement à partir de la propriété il y a un escalier menant à la rivière avec des endroits ombragés sous les arbres.

« Tout simplement parfait pour se détendre et beaucoup plus agréable que les bungalows de Villa Santo Domingo. Le logement est vraiment recommandé. Lors de ma randonnée de deux jours, j'ai pu y laisser mes excédents de bagages.

« J'étais arrivé de Bayamo par camion pour 6 pesos nationaux jusqu'à Yara. De là, j'ai pris un taxi pour Bartolomé Maso. À partir de l'hôtel avec vue et piscine, un trajet en jeep a été fixé pour moi pour 12cuc. Malheureusement je n'ai pas pu prendre de photos. » Morayn 280408 Stefan Loose
TREK DANS L'HISTOIRE : UNE MARCHE DANS LES MONTAGNES DE LA SIERRA MAESTRA
À partir de l'hôtel Santo Domingo — 75 km au sud de Bayamo en passant par Bartolomé Maso — le premier jour complet de cet itinéraire inclut une visite à La Comandancia, le quartier général de Fidel Castro, là où sa bande de barbudos avaient installé leurs pénates, là où Che Guevara avait installé une radio d'où il diffusait de la propagande pour convaincre les campesinos et montagnards et même les citadins de Santiago de se joindre à leur cause.

Cette partie du trek prend entre 3 et 4 heures de marche à partir de Santo Domingo. Le lieu dégage une telle intensité historique qu'il serait futile d'y passer en coup de vent ; )

La deuxième partie de ce premier jour poursuit le trek jusqu'au petit hameau de La Platica où la première nuit dans la Sierra Maestra se passera dans le refuge qui accueille les visiteurs — avec un dîner préparé et servi par un cuisinier local. On aura le temps de visiter les gens qui habitent ce coin éloigné dont l'école primaire et la clinique médicale.

Le second jour dans le parc compte un trek de 5-6 heures jusqu'au refuge de Aguada de Joaquin qui se trouve deux heures en-deça du sommet de Pico Turquino. Ça ne vaudrait pas l'effort d'essayer de joindre le prochain refuge qui se trouve à 90 mins de marche sur l'autre versant du Pico.

Le troisième jour de ce « périple montagneux » se poursuit à pied de Aguada de Joaquin à Pico Cuba où la troisième nuit se passera en refuge.

Le jour final comprend une descente de 4 heures vers Las Cuevas sur la côte, là où se termine l'itinéraire.

[N.B. Au forçail, on peut faire l'ascension et la re-descente en une seule journée (allo, les mollets !) mais seulement à partir de la côte caribéenne et ce, doc, sans descendre le versant opposé vers la Comandancia et Santo Domingo ]

« "In March 2008, I spent a wonderful week in Santo Domingo in the Sierra Maestra and made two guided walks (The Comandancia and Pico Turquino) organized by the Park Service - located at the end of the main road to the left of the barrier.

« Before and between trips, I stayed in the Casa Esperanza operated by an extremely friendly and nice couple : Ulice and spouse Esperanza. The exact location of the house can be obtained from Villa Santo Domingo. The room cost 20cuc. This casa particular is very clean and very quiet and can be found on the other side of the river in a wonderful garden. I felt totally comfortable.

« Ulice blessed me with freshly squeezed juices, fresh vegetables and other delights from the garden of Esperanza. Ulice speaks some English. Breakfasts and dinners were always delicious and plentiful. The couple lives as on a farm with pigs, chickens, cats and a dog. Directly from the property there is a staircase leading to the river with shade under the trees.

« Simply perfect for relaxing and a lot nicer than the bungalows at Villa Santo Domingo. Housing is really recommended. During my two-day hike, I could leave my excess baggage.

« I arrived from Bayamo by truck for only 6 pesos in moneda nacional to Yara. From there I took a taxi to Bartolome Maso. From the hotel with its views and pool, I got a ride on a jeep was set for me for 12cuc. Unfortunately I could not take pictures. » Morayn 280408 Stefan Loose
TREKKING THROUGH HISTORY : THE SIERRA MAESTRA MOUNTAINS
The first full day in the park includes a guided visit to La Comandancia, Fidel's secret HQ in the Sierra Maestra mountains, which takes the best part of 3-4 hours from the starting point of Santo Domingo. It is such a significant place to visit that it would be pointless to rush the visit.

The latter part of that first day is spent walking to the La Platica community, an hour from La Comandancia, where the first night is spent in a refuge with dinner cooked and served by a local chef. There is usually time to explore the community and to visit the local primary school and doctors post, which is all part of the cultural tourism aspect of our trips in Cuba.

The second day in the park includes trekking for 5-6 hours to the Aguada de Joaquin refuge about 2 hours from the summit of Pico Turquino. It would not be practical to push people on to the next available refuge on Pico Cuba which is 90 mins from the summit on the other side of the mountain.

The third full day in the park includes hiking from Aguada de Joaquin to Pico Cuba where the third night is spent.

The final day includes a 4 hour descent to Las Cuevas on the coast and the end of the trail. I do not see how anyone can do the whole ascent and descent in one day unless they were going up and down the same route from the Caribbean side rather than going down the other side of the peak to Santo Domingo.
